Backpacks Overview
To get the most pleasure from your particular chosen trip whether it be just a day’s hike or a more adventurous multi day camping experience you will want a comfortable and convenient way to carry your supplies regardless of the quantitly you are taking.
Choosing the right backpack for your particular excursion can definately make all the difference to your experience.
There are many shapes and sizes of backpacks. Out of so many brands you will be assured to find the right pack for you. You will also find they can be made from a variety of materials and may include a range of accessories as you look within the following catergories of women’s packs, men’s packs. If you’re new to the backpack world then the choices can seem overwhelming.
So where to begin?
A few things to consider when purchasing your pack:
What type of trip are you doing?
A one-day hike? An over-nighter? Two to three nights out or perhaps a week or longer?
A small pack, as previously mentioned, is all that will be required to carry necessities if you are only hiking for a day’s outing. There are extra items to consider if you are doing an overnighter. Cooking items and eating utensils, extra food, a sleeping bag and unless you are staying in a hut you will need a tent. Unless you will be totally reliant on nature’s broad-leaf plants for your toileting requirements you will likely want to throw in a roll of toilet paper. (A word of caution here that sometimes it pays to test plants on the back of your hand in case of irritation
)
With all these things to consider Gregory backpacks are great packs to look at.
If the trip you are planning is for a number of days then choosing a backpack with a detachable smaller pack option would eliminate the need to take your entire packload on shorter day trips away from your base camp.

Sizing Gregory Backpacks: An important step to choosing a mountaineering or backpacking pack is selecting the proper fit.
To do so, you can follow these steps:
Measure your torso and choose a frame that is right for that length. Large packs are recommended for a torso of more than 21 inches in length and small packs for torsos of lenghts less than 18 inches.)
Put the shoulder harness in the correct slot, based on the length of your torso.
Evenly distribute 20 pounds of weight into the pack and place the pack on your back.
Tighten the waistbelt and the shoulder straps.
The waistbelt pad is best positioned right where the pelvis and hip meet.
Bending your leg from the thigh at a 90 degree angle should cause the waistbelt to touch at the thigh area.
The armpit is where the shoulder harness’s curve should be.
The shoulder straps should be tightened just enough to notice a bit of tension. Allow some looseness at the bottom of about two inches.
If any of these steps is difficult to do, this is a sign that the pack is not of the right size.
Gregory backpacks are worth your consideration.
