			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The US News and World Reports  (US News) released, on June 7, 2011, the results from its study of 20 diets. The purpose of the study was to name the best diets according to several standards such as weight management and heart health. Low carb diets fared poorly in the results in virtually all categories. This is a particularly surprising and disheartening result. Studies and opinion papers released over the last few years clearly point to sugar and refined carbohydrates as our enemy 1 in the ongoing strubble against obesity and related health issues like metabolic syndrome, heart problems, and diabetes. According to this US News story, the low carb diets, which specifically target sugar and refined carbs, are at the bottom of the selection of diets the public should consider. This just does not make much sense considering the success of <a target="_blank" href="http://cravingsugar.net/low-carb-weight-loss-gary-taubes-diet-plans-fast">low carb weight loss</a> programs. These results from the US News merit a critical review.</p>
<p>To conduct the diet rankings, US News staff members pulled togehter information for 20 diets, drafted &#8220;profiles&#8221; for each and submitted them to 22 established specialists in nutrition, diet, heart problems, and diabetes, who made the final choices.</p>
<p>There were 1 or 2 locarb type diets in the mix, but the one we&#8217;ve got the most clinical info on, Atkins, did not fare very well.</p>
<p>Promoters of the locarb and low sugar approaches to weight control have surmised that the reason why these diets did not do very well was the way this study was conducted. The foundation of the diet comparisons was defective at the most elementary level because all diets were evaluated, in part, based on their conformance with the U.S. nutritional guidelines, which include much too high a percentage of required carbs to allow for weight managemente with a low carbohydrate approach. The locarb diets did not have a chance from the start of this study!</p>
<p>During the last a few years, sugar and refined carbohydrates have risen as the primary culprit behind America&#8217;s battle with weight. We need to find some way to remove sugar and refined carbohydrates from their present, dominant, place in our diet. Till then, the current low carbohydrate diets in their assorted forms are a way forward. To have these diets relegated to the bottom of the pile by the US News is a problem. We need this subject brought forward so the general public can understand better what the problems are. The public deserves transparency on this important issue.</p>
