<p>There are several “superfoods” that have been shown in studies to bring cholesterol numbers in line. If you add these foods to your diet, they can work on the cholesterol in your body and help you keep bad cholesterol to a minimum. So what are they?</p>
<p><strong>Apples</strong> (with skin on) – The outer flesh of apples has particularly strong health properties. Try diced apples (with skin) in your morning cereal, in green salads (especially good with nuts added also), spread with a tiny bit of peanut butter, or even as an evening dessert baked with a sprinkle of cinnamon and dash of sugar.</p>
<p><strong>Beans</strong> – The fiber of beans works hard to keep bad cholesterol down. Try them in different kinds of soups (they can make any soup recipe especially hearty and filling), from kidney beans in a Southwestern style soup or chili to Italian cannelloni beans in a pasta-laden minestrone.</p>
<p><strong>Soy and soy products</strong> – Yep, that means tofu, soy nuts, soy milk and more. Soy has been shown to help the liver get rid of bad cholesterol in our bodies. Try a tofu sandwich, soy milk in your morning cereal, or munch on some soy nuts mixed with dried apples or dried cranberries for a healthy afternoon snack.</p>

<p> <strong>What is cholesterol</strong></p>
<p> Cholesterol is a type of fatty substance, called lipids, that provides a membrane around the cells. It is beneficial in moderation. But if the blood accumulates too much LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and doesn&#8217;t have enough HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol), cardiovascular disease (CVD) can develop. This means you&#8217;re at risk for heart attack and strokes. Triglycerides are another factor that can contribute to heart disease. Triglycerides are another type of lipid in the blood.</p>
<p> <strong>Determining cholesterol levels</strong></p>
<p> To determine the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol in your blood, you can take a cholesterol test, also known as a lipid test. For a lipoprotein profile, you need to fast (not eat or drink) for 9-12 hours before the test. You can drink water but no other liquids.</p>
<p> For a total cholesterol test, or a total cholesterol test with HDL measurement, you don&#8217;t need to fast. To test your cholesterol level, a phlebotomist will take a blood sample which will be taken to the lab for testing.</p>
<p> <strong>Test results</strong></p>
<p> HDL cholesterol levels of 60 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L) or higher are beneficial in lowering heart-disease risk.<br /> LDL cholesterol levels less than 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L) are considered optimal.<br /> Triglyceride levels above 199 mg/dL (2.2 mmol/L) are considered high and may require treatment.</p>
<p> <strong>Risk factors</strong></p>
<p> Certain factors such as diet, activity level, weight and family history can contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels.</p>

<p>They took 52 adults from ages to 60 to 69 who were in usually good health but not physically active, and none were taking part in a training session. The study showed clearly that after reasonably powerful exercise programs, participators who had gained the most muscle bulk also had the most lofty levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, &#8220;a terribly unpredictable result and one that surprised us.</p>

<p>There are numerous “superfoods” that help bring cholesterol numbers in line. &#8220;Superfoods&#8221; are simple, natural foods that are generally easy to find and relatively inexpensive that serve up a powerhouse of nutrients for our bodies. So which superfoods help lower cholesterol?</p>

<li><strong>Apples</strong> (with skin on) – The outer flesh of apples has particularly strong health properties. Try diced apples (with skin) in your morning cereal, in green salads (especially good with nuts added also), spread with a tiny bit of peanut butter, or even as an evening dessert baked with a sprinkle of cinnamon and dash of sugar.</li>

Try a tofu salad, soy in your morning cereal, or throw some soy nuts into a baggie with dried apples or dried cranberries for a good afternoon snack.</li>

But you have to run this test between ages one and nine to find out; this correlation can&#8217;t be made in newborns and young adults.</p>
<p> Parents can be encouraged that familial hypercholesterolemia is rare, affecting only one in every 500 people. However, having the condition makes adults between the ages of 20 to 39 more susceptible to dying or coronary disease as a result of the condition. The good news is that lowering cholesterol can substantially curb this risk.</p>
<p> If a child is determined to have high cholesterol levels, he or she would be closely monitored until they reach adulthood, when therapies would begin. <p> <strong>What is cholesterol</strong></p>
<p> Cholesterol is a type of fatty substance, called lipids, that provides a membrane around the cells. It is beneficial in moderation, but if the blood accumulates too much LDL-cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) and doesn&#8217;t have enough HDL-cholesterol or high-density lipoproteins (good cholesterol), cardiovascular disease (CVD) can develop. This means you&#8217;re at greater risk for heart attack and strokes. Triglycerides can also contribute to heart disease. Triglycerides are another type of lipid in the blood.</p>
<p> <strong>Determining cholesterol levels</strong></p>
<p> To determine the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol in your blood, you can take a cholesterol test, also known as a lipid test. For a lipoprotein profile, you need to fast (not eat or drink) for 9-12 hours before the test. You can drink water but no other liquids.</p>
<p> You don&#8217;t need to fast for a total cholesterol test, or a total cholesterol test with HDL measurement. To test your cholesterol level, a phlebotomist will take a blood sample which will be taken to the lab for testing.</p>
<p> <strong>Test results</strong></p>
<p> HDL cholesterol levels of 60 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L) or higher are beneficial in lowering heart-disease risk.<br /> LDL cholesterol levels less than 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L) are considered optimal.<br /> Triglyceride levels above 199 mg/dL (2.2 mmol/L) are considered high and may require treatment.</p>
<p> <strong>Risk factors</strong></p>
<p> Certain factors such as diet, activity level, weight and family history can contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels.</p>
