It was the only thing he wanted in the whole world. He dreamed of it at night. He daydreamed about it in the daytime. He watched cyclists in races. He watched leisurely riders in the park. He wanted to be one of them.
He thought over and over of buying mountain bike, buying mountain bike, it dominated his thoughts. He wanted to be out in the fresh air and sunshine, riding up a hill till he worked up a sweat. He’d wear the required helmet even though he hated them. He’d get one in dark blue to match the new bike.
Some kids dream of riding skateboards and others want to roller skate. Some want to ski down mountains or cross country. He wanted that bike and could envision himself on that fast bike. He would save up his earnings from the lawn care business and his job at the grocery store. Soon he’d follow his own recreational desires.
He came down the stairs and there was his mom at the kitchen table. She smiled at him and her eyes returned to the stack of cake decorating books lying in front of her. She got up and offered to scramble some eggs for him. As they chatted, she mentioned a friend who bought a diamondback bike last week. Her friend said it was a dream ride.
He said he’d look at those when the time came he could afford his new bike. They chatted about her cake decorating job and his lawn care jobs and the new one at the grocery store His time was filled for work and he was really glad the locations were close by. He was going over to weed a couple of flowerbeds for Mrs. Hanson later that morning.
His mom was going to bake and decorate three different cakes this week for lawn parties. Spring was a busy season and she was dreaming up ideas for them. One was going to have a palm tree, sand and water all done in different colors of frosting. The blues and greens would look good on a pale yellow background. The other two were a chocolate for the kids at the same reunion and a refreshing lemon cake. The first would be decorated with beach balls and the second with sand dunes and ocean waves.
They talked about the day she could buy the new car she wanted. She was saving for it and had almost enough for the down payment. He would enjoy going with her to look at cars. She, in turn, would go out shopping with him on the day he was ready to look at diamondback bikes.

Some people have discovered that retirement can bring families together in new ways. In some instances healthy relationships mean better health for you.
There is a couple that moved away from the city where their family and friends lived. They were swapping the bright lights and tall buildings for trees and a lake in the countryside.
He was not out buying mountain bike because he inherited one from the former owners when he bought the place by the small lake. He spruced it up and used it to check mail at the end of the long driveway.
His schwinn mountain bike often leans against a tree while he enjoys camping with the kids. They make plans for where they will ride and how they could improve some of the trails.
The chow is pretty good too. Retirement means lots of time to put the fast food days behind and explore creative cooking. He balances healthy recipes with flair.
In the evening he breaks out the dreadnought acoustic guitar and makes another connection with the grandkids. Music pulls them together in new ways.
His wife has mastered kayaking and introduced it to the family. Now the entire tribe picks up a paddle and enjoys the calm lake water. The morning ritual has grown along with their collection of kayaks.
These retirees left the city in their rear view mirror to live in the land of fresh air and water. They thought it would be healthier than the city. They did not realize they would be riding bikes and kayaking every day.
They credit their fitness to the active life they lead. They are convinced that their exercise and diet are the reason there is nothing stronger than headache medicine in the house.
The lack of stress and the increased happiness in their lives is keeping them healthier in unexpected ways. They believe that sharing more time with family has created deep bonds.
They spend more time sharing activities and life with their family members than they did when everyone lived in the same town. They use the new internet connection to keep in touch and have added a blog.
They have downloaded recipes to try, gardening tips, and checked out groomed trails in the area for the mountain bikes.
They joined a social site and created profiles. Many old friends and all of the relatives have discovered them online. They have relatives they barely knew as friends and make new ones daily.
You may find that you now have the time to connect or reconnect with others in a more meaningful way. It does not take a new location to tackle new hobbies that enhance your physical and mental well-being.
